How Much Does a Swimming Pool Cost in the Algarve
A pool is almost always quoted separately from the house, and it is where quotes diverge most between builders. This guide explains what drives the price.
Reinforced concrete or prefabricated
A reinforced concrete pool is built in place, allows any shape and depth, and integrates with the plot and the house design. It is what we use on most projects, particularly where there is a level change or the pool sits against the building.
Prefabricated shells cost less and install faster, but limit shape and dimensions. On plots with rock or difficult access, the time advantage disappears quickly.
What pushes the price up
The tank is only part of the cost. What surrounds the pool often weighs as much as the pool itself.
- Excavation and spoil removal, worse where there is rock
- Retaining walls, where the pool sits on sloping ground
- Lining: membrane, tiling or natural stone
- Filtration system, pump and plant room
- Heat pump heating and thermal cover
- Surrounding terrace, steps, lighting and safety systems
Maintenance and running costs
The bill does not end at construction. A pool in the Algarve carries annual costs for water treatment, pump electricity and lining upkeep.
A cover reduces evaporation, chemical use and heating, and pays for itself within a few years. Decide on it at design stage rather than afterwards, because how the cover is fixed determines how the surround is finished.
Does a pool need a permit?
As a rule yes, particularly when it forms part of a construction application or changes the sealed surface area of the plot. When the pool is part of the villa design it goes through the same council process, which simplifies things considerably.
How long does a concrete pool take to build?
Typically 2 to 4 months, covering excavation, structure, waterproofing, lining and equipment. Built alongside the villa, that period absorbs into the overall construction programme.
Is it worth building the pool at the same time as the house?
Almost always. You share excavation, machine access, cranes and crews, and avoid tearing up landscaping that has already been finished. Adding a pool later usually costs more than doing both together.
